The Great Depression
According to Isaac Asimov, “No One can possibly had lived through the Great Depression without being scarred by it. No amount of experiences since the depression can convince someone who
has lived through it that the world is safe economically (Thinkexist.com).” The Great Depression was full of hopeless people and lots of unemployment. Starting in 1789 the United States had two major revolutions. 1.Civil War 2.Great Depression (1930’s) “More Then 13 million Americans were unemployed. Jobless and homeless thousands of the unemployed built makeshift shelters in empty lots in the big cities (Leuchtenburg 8).”
Born in New York into a wealthy family. Roosevelt was a democrat and was elected for president 4 times,
and was president for 12 years. On March 4th 1933 president Roosevelt promised America to end the Great Depression, during his inauguration he also promised to bring a “New Deal” (Bernstein 109). After
his inauguration FDR called a “special” session of Congress to begin on March 9th, 1933, that’s when his “First Hundred Days officially started (Graff 518). Right after that president Roosevelt begin working, he knew that he had to step up and do things, he would spend time working with congress to pass many programs. Two days after his inauguration he closed all banks (Bernstein 110). Roosevelt “worked day and night, he and his experts drew up a plan for the banks reopening (Mifflin 520)”. He first made a
Declaration Of Emergency, this was so that they could have deal with banks and get congress back into the capitol (“AvaHome”). The Emergency Banking Act provided for Treasury Department inspection of all banks before they could reopen again, congress passed this bill really quickly (“Fact-Archive”)
On March 9th congress passed the Emergency Banking Legislation, right after that on march 10th FDR asked congress to take up an Economic Policy Bill, Roosevelt wanted to act quickly that’s why he did this. On March 20th that Bill became a law as the Economy Act, which proposed to balance the federal budget by cutting the salaries of government employees, this only took 10 days to get accomplished by Roosevelt (“AvaHome”). By March 13th banks begin to open again.
On March 21st the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was sent to congress, and by March 31st the CCC became a law, this association created lots of jobs for young single males, physically fit men between the ages of 17 and 28. They were paid one dollar per day and they had to send all but five dollars of their earnings home every month. They did all sorts of jobs such as constructing bridges, buildings, and dams and developing state parks (“AvaHome”). In 1942 the CCC proved effective against unemployment. Approximately 3.5 million single men in America were employed by
the CCC (Miller 49).
Roosevelt had talked a bout a “New Deal” this New Deal had 3 main goals that FDR wanted to
accomplish “Relief, Recovery, And Reform”. With new agencies being made by Roosevelt, these agencies helped with money for the poor, farmers, and many provided jobs for many unemployed people (Bernstein 112). On June 6, 1934 FDR signed the act creating the (SEC) Securities and Exchange Commission.
The Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed by congress in May 1933, FDR wanted to produce a federal program to protect the U.S. and that’s why he decided to make this law. Henry A. Wallace, Roosevelt’s secretary of agriculture helped him a lot, this bill reflected the needs of leaders of various farm organizations, and this also affected Roosevelt’s secretary of agriculture. The AAA established an important and long-lasting federal role in the planning on the entire agriculture sector of the economy (“Fact-Achieve”).
The Great Depression was also hard for young people. This hard period of time in the United States interrupted their childhoods. Instead of focusing on school, they had work hard to just earn a little money. The media did a lot to help these children. The biggest issue was money, transportation, and clothing. Roosevelt tried to help them by sending letters to important people. Many of them were answered but some weren’t even opened (Robert Cohen 29). In crafting the first New Deal Stephen Hess said that FDR had “everything ready to go and congress was perfectly happy to pass it before they even read it” (“The Boston Globe”). A lot of new bills and laws were passed during FDR’s first hundred days of being a president. Roosevelt’s first hundred days took place from March 9th to June 16, 1933.
President Roosevelt inspired lots of people, like no other president has, with his plan of getting America
back in its place. The New Deal helped America by giving relief to the poor and hungry people.
“From March 9th until congress adjoined on June 16th, president Roosevelt sent 15 separate proposals to Capitol Hill, and congress adopted all 15. In all the bills of the Hundred Days represented the most extraordinary set of reforms in the country’s history (William E. 11).
In conclusion The Great Depression helped Americans to learn how to survive trough a difficult time and
to learn how to be independent, with the help of president Roosevelt they could work, and even though it was hard working that they had to do, they did it just to earn some money to help there families, though they did get paid less because of the problems with the economy. The “New Deal” brought hope to them and they knew that they weren’t alone because president Roosevelt was always there to help. In the spring of 1934 the U.S. had pulled out of the depths of the depression. “In a year’s time Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal had enacted more significant social, and economic legislation than had been passed in all of American’s previous history” (William E 15). Roosevelt showed that he really did care about the people suffering because of the Great Depression by making all the programs, and all of what he did in his first hundred days. The Great Depression was a challenging experience for everyone in the United States but President Roosevelt made it work perfectly to fix things up.
